Teacher of the Year

2024-2025 TCCHS TEACHER OF THE YEAR

JUSTIN AMARO

Justin Amaro has been in education for 18 years and has completed three years at Thomas County Central High School.  He teaches Advanced Placement (AP) American Government and Politics, AP Microeconomics, and AP Macroeconomics.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in History Education from Troy University and a Master of Science in Foundations of Adult Education from Troy University. Additionally, he has completed coursework at Valdosta State in Educational Leadership.  He has earned previous honors, such as the 2012, 2014, and 2015 STAR Teacher awards, and he was the Cairo High School Teacher of the Year in 2012-2013.  After eight years of teaching, he entered school administration and was an assistant principal in the Grady County School System.  Due to his desire to work more directly with students again, he took advantage of the opportunity to join the Thomas County Central High School staff and return to teaching.  His ongoing goal in his AP Government and AP Economics classes is to bridge the gap between theory linked to each subject and real-world application.  It is crucial that students see the direct impact of economic policies or governmental structure on their communities, careers, and financial or political decisions.  By incorporating current events, hands-on projects, field trips, and interactive discussions, students are empowered to think critically, engage in their community, and apply economic reasoning when making financial choices.  His wife Amy Amaro also works in the Thomas County School System as a band director at TCMS and TCCHS.  They have a son, Davis, and a daughter, Alli, who are in the MERIT program at Thomas County Middle School.
